WHEREAS, “Osteopathic Recognition may be conferred by the Osteopathic Principles Committee upon an ACGME-accredited graduate medical education program providing requisite education in Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP)”;1 and
WHEREAS, OPP refers to a philosophical and practical approach to patient management and treatment, including osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), based on an understanding of body unity, self-healing and self-regulatory mechanisms, and the interrelationship of structure and function1; and
WHEREAS, “survey results show that a vast majority of osteopathic medical students would prefer ACGME-accredited programs with osteopathic recognition over those without this status… to continue building and utilizing the OPP skills taught to them in undergraduate medical education,”2 ; and
WHEREAS, as of the 2019-2020 academic year, less than 2% of the total 12,092 ACGME residency programs were osteopathically recognized, with the majority of those occurring within family medicine (62.7%) and internal med (14%); and
WHEREAS, one of the constitutional mission of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) is to “supporting the multifaceted education of osteopathic physicians-in-training”; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the National Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) work with relevant stakeholders to promote Osteopathic Recognition; and, be it further
RESOLVED, that the National Student Osteopathic Medical Association submit a resolution to the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) asking them to work with relevant stakeholders to promote Osteopathic Recognition.
Explanatory Statement
Since the advent of the single accreditation system, Osteopathic Recognition has been one of the best indicator’s for osteopathic medical students to identify residency programs with quality OPP training. As a result, osteopathic student and physician leaders should be intentional in efforts to support Osteopathic Recognition to ensure that OPP continues to thrive.
