President’s Welcome

Welcome to the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA)

Hello and welcome to SOMA!

As the student arm of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), we passionately amplify the voices of our over 15,000 members across the country as the largest independent organization of Osteopathic medical students. In addition to multifaceted programming, we write resolutions that are the basis of our policy and advocacy to entities like the AOA, the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME), and the American Medical Association (AMA).

Our community is known for our strong advocates, creative thinkers, and committed leaders. While we all have different beliefs, values, and passions, we are united under the common understanding that we can always do better by our patients and our profession. Our chapters carve out niches of addressing health disparities, expanding exposure to the Osteopathic profession, commenting on political currents, providing invaluable professional experiences, and maintaining an Osteopathic identity. Our organization offers a home and platform to every single member.

In Ancient Greek, the word “soma” means body which in one word describes the beautiful junction of healthcare and our community. We are a body of student physicians seeking to engage with one another, with our neighbors, and with our government on behalf of our profession and future patients.

On behalf of the entire leadership team, I invite you to join us, whether that’s to find your voice as a member, to support our members as a business partner, to mentor us as a leader in our field, or to hear us as a policy-maker.

Clara Hofman, OMS IV
