Welcome to the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA)

Hello, and thank you for your interest in SOMA! We are the student arm of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) and we represent the nation’s largest network of osteopathic medical students. If you are an osteopathic medical student, there is a place for you in SOMA. We enthusiastically invite you to become a member and grow within your profession.

Since its inception in March of 1970, SOMA has represented the voice of osteopathic medical students. We are an organization committed to advocacy within the medical profession and support of osteopathic medical students through the challenges of medical school. We do this by submitting resolutions to the AOA House of Delegates, releasing public statements that represent the student voice, and leveraging our relationships with strong partners.

We are also a home for community outreach, philanthropy, lifelong learning, and leadership development. Through our local chapters at Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (COMs), we implement educational and outreach programming to support students and local communities, with an emphasis on region-specific charities and low-income minority communities. Through our national conferences, we are able to bring together passionate student leaders from across the country to learn from each other, inspire one another, and build lifelong friendships.

In collaboration with our many partner organizations, SOMA also endeavors to offset the enormous financial burden that so many of us face. We do so through exclusive SOMA scholarships, product discounts, and free resources for our members. We know that medical school comes with a unique set of challenges, so we leverage our connections and resources to make the journey just a little bit easier.

For any reading this welcome letter who may not be in the osteopathic community, we invite you to partner with us. While we are proud of our osteopathic distinctiveness and identity, we strive to connect with all in the House of Medicine.

On behalf of the entire leadership team, welcome to the SOMA Family.
