The Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) is excited to announce a call for applications for two of our Research Competitions happening at OMED 2017, the AOA-SOMA Research Poster Competition and the BIOM-SOMA Seminar Competitions. These are excellent opportunities for students to showcase their research and international experiences to the entire Osteopathic community, as well as an opportunity for cash prizes!
AOA-SOMA Research Poster Competition:
SOMA is proud to co-sponsor the American Osteopathic Association’s (AOA) annual Research Poster Competition. Applications are open only to SOMA members (sign up here if you are not yet a SOMA member!) Interested applicants can submit their Abstracts through the submission portal by the deadline 7/17/17, 11:59 pm, CST. All accepted abstracts will be published in an online edition of the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. The competition will select 3 First Prize awards of $500 each, and 6 Second Prize awards of $250 each. Accepted applicants must be available to present their abstract as a poster in the AOA-SOMA Research Poster Competition, which will take place at OMED 2017, in Philadelphia, PA, 10/7/17 - 10/10/17 (schedule TBA). Applicant eligibility criteria, abstract submission instructions and abstract guidelines can be found here.
SOMA is also proud to co-sponsor the competition portions of the Bureau of International Osteopathic Medicine’s (BIOM) 19th Annual International Seminar: “Innovation in Osteopathic Education and Outreach.” The BIOM Seminar will consist of three competition divisions:
Global Health Outreach: Reflective Essay Competition.
International Research Abstract Competition.
NEW THIS YEAR: International Narrative Medicine Essay Competition.
For all three BIOM competition divisions, submissions should be related to an international health-related experience the applicant had between 9/1/16 and 8/31/17. Interested applicants can submit their essays and abstracts through the submission portal by the deadline 9/5/17, 11:59 pm, CST. Each of the three competition divisions will award their own prizes for:
1st Place: $750, opportunity to present project at the BIOM Seminar.
2nd Place: $500, announcement of author name and submission title at the BIOM Seminar.
Honorable Mention: awarded to three authors, with an announcement of author name and submission title at the BIOM Seminar.
In addition, there will be one grand prize to the top overall entrant in all three BIOM competition divisions combined. This winner will receive an opportunity to present the closing speech at the BIOM Seminar and a cash prize of $1,500. All applicants to the International Research Abstract Competition will be invited to present their submissions as a poster at the BIOM Seminar which will take place at OMED 2017, in Philadelphia, PA, 10/7/17 - 10/10/17 (schedule TBA). Dear Osteopathic Medical Student Researchers,
The American Osteopathic Association (AOA) is proud to announce the Request for Applications (RFA) for our Osteopathic Medical Student (OMS) Research Fellowship Program. This program supports research training of OMSs and enables the OMSs to conduct a basic science, clinical, or health services research projects that will make a significant contribution to osteopathic medicine. Additionally, this RFA seeks to introduce OMSs to the osteopathic research community and encourage them to implement research throughout their career.
The OMS Research Fellowship Program will award successful applicants up to $5,000 for research projects spanning 6 to 12 month research periods, beginning . OMS Research Fellows will have the opportunity to present their research as a Podium Presentation at OMED 2018, and publish their results thereafter.
The requirements for fellowship applicants include conducting research in one of the AOA’s five research priority focus areas. Conducting research in these focus areas has the greatest potential to impact patient care and evidence-based medicine and demonstrate the value DOs and their approach to care bring to the medical profession.
OMS Research Fellows will conduct research under a research mentor. Funds may support supplemental projects of existing research studies, granted supplemental projects have research questions and specific aims distinct from the existing (parent) study.
The deadline for application is , however, students are encouraged to begin working on their applications now, as the grant application is lengthy and requires appropriate planning.
