Welcome Back Picnic!!
We started off our year strong at our annual Welcome Back Picnic. Here we recruited members heavily by explaining the benefits of joining and the opportunities that SOMA provides. Much of the first year class attended, and it was a great success!
The inaugural meeting of the Student Community Health Initiative spearheaded by Local Health Disparities Chair featured special presentations given by Barbara Ann Lewis, RN of the United Methodist Alliance, a student speaker from Bridging the Gaps, and a special guest who gave her personal account of homelessness in Erie.
The Student Community Health Initiative following the event reached out to Second Harvest food Bank in Erie to provide training and volunteer opportunities for SOMA members. A group of 15 SOMA members attended the volunteer orientation for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Erie and participated in a service project.
SOMA has hosted several speakers and companies that have given advice and support services to our members at monthly club meetings. Our first meeting was attended by over 100 students, and featured speaker National SOMA President Jimmy Demeo gave an impassioned address to our members. Presentations from Picmonic and Boards Boot Camp have given first and second year students an opportunity to start planning for boards and learn about the specific resources available to them. Millcreek Hospital’s DME Dr. John Kalata provided an introduction to post-doctoral opportunities and Dr. Craig Rush presented a lecture on mental health and substance abuse in patients and providers. Future speakers include the Izbicki brothers speaking about their successful, innovative Direct Primary Care practice in Erie and Congressman Glenn Thompson to discuss political advocacy in medicine.
